Cockroach Races: How They Help Teach Science and Math at McIntyre Elementary

Here's an unusual teaching technique.

McIntyre Elementary students in Deanna Richey’s sixth-grade class handled and raced cockroaches down cylinders during science class.

Each group timed the insects and averaged times to incorporate math principles into the lesson.

Sixth-grade students in Barbra Weaver’s class performed different experiments with cockroaches.

The students utilized behavior chambers to determine the preferences of cockroaches.

Each container held things such as wet sand, leaves, breakfast cereal of different flavors, vinegar, pink sugarplum body spray and other items. They determined cockroaches preferred wet sand, Cookie Crunch cereal, pink sugarplum body spray and vanilla extract (just in case you were wondering).
