Physical Education Teachers Promote Fitness in North Park

North Hills Physical Education Teachers to speak at Freedom 5K & 1 Mile Walk promoting Healthy Kids for a Healthy Planet.

Two Physical Education teachers from Shaler Area School District will promote the importance of exercise to decrease childhood obesity at the Freedom 5k & 1 Mile Walk onSaturday, May 11 in North Park (Pie Traynor Field). The event is Western PA Montessori School’s annual fundraiser to promote health and fitness amongst children.

Mr. Mike Chmielewski is a Health & Physical Education teacher at Reserve Primary K-3 and has been teaching for nine years. Mrs. Sharon Shearer has been educating students in Health & Physical Education for 18 years at Shaler
Area and has been the Department Chairperson for the past 5 years.

“It’s so exciting to teach fitness to my students at Marzolf Primary K-3”, Shearer comments. “My department colleagues and I feel lucky to have the
first impact of fitness and sports on our students.”

Mr. Chmielewski and Mrs. Shearer also emphasized the challenge they face with the increase of technology and decrease of hours that children spend in physical activity. “It’s definitely a challenge and we try to encourage students to use technology for exercise and have fun getting in shape,” states Shearer.

“We are excited to be holding our third annual event,” said Carol Miskell, head master of the Western Pennsylvania Montessori School.  “We believe in healthy kids for a healthy planet and hope to bring out lots of folks who want to share in an event that promotes health and fitness.”

Event Details:
• The event wiil be at the Pie Traynor Field area of North Park on May 11, 2013.
• Event day registration will take place in the Harmar Pavilion starting at 8:45 a.m. • The WPMS Freedom 1-mile walk begins at 9:30 am.
• The 5K run begins at 10:00 a.m.
• Free Parking is available at the North Park Pool.
