Simple Summer Fun
Simple summer fun from an evening spent sitting on the front porch while my son chased lighting bugs.
Simple summer fun is often times the best kind of fun you can have and the kind that makes the most lasting memories!
I was reminded of this tonight as I was sitting on the front porch watching my son chase after lightning bugs. Sitting in the dusky twilight while a gentle breeze tickled the leaves was refreshing even with the humidity that is hanging in the air. My son and I had just finished our ice cream when the neighborhood started to sparkle with that neon yellow light that only a lightning bug can emit.
He spent the next half an hour chasing the lightning bugs around the front yard. I chuckled as the lightning bugs danced just out of his reach. He ran, he jumped, he swatted, and he smacked (as well as smooshed a bug or two) with his little hands. His bare feet didn't feel the scrapes of the driveway because he was determined to catch one. His determination paid off...not once but twice. Each time he marched over to me and presented his "trophy" and I had to hold it in my hand so that I could feel it tickle (as per his orders). Thankfully, he has not realized that you can smash/smear the "light" portion of the bug for a cool glowing affect....I hope it will be a while before he catches on to that.

Tonight I was transported back to my own childhood of catching lightning bugs with my grandmother.
Tonight, even though it was quiet and we were at home, is one of the best nights that I have had with my son this year.

For now he is content with letting the lightning bugs fly off "so that they can go back to their own mommies and daddies" but I don't think that is going to last too much longer. But the memory that was made tonight will last forever in my mind....
