Why should a veteran join his local American Legion post?
After nearly 100 years, the American Legion still provides veterans an opportunity to serve their country and their fellow vets
The American Legion was founded in 1919 by World War I veterans who wanted to maintain their friendships while helping other veterans affected by the war. Nearly 100 years later, veterans still join the Legion for these same reasons.
The Legion was founded on the principle of service. One of the mottos we use frequently is, "Still Serving America." A veteran does not stop serving his country once his time in the military comes to an end.
The American Legion stands on what we call our four pillars of service: Veterans Affairs & Rehabilitation, Americanism, Children & Youth, and National Defense. At the post level, those commitments take on various forms: welcoming vets from the VA hospital to our post for a meal and a day of entertainment; properly disposing of unserviceable flags; instructing classrooms of children on flag etiquette; assisting recently discharged vets who are looking for guidance as they take the next step in their career path; and many more.

If you are a veteran, you may be eligible for membership in the American Legion. No other organization provides the same level of comradeship with fellow vets, along with endless opportunities to continue serving your country. I urge you to consider membership in this great organization, and would welcome you to our ranks with open arms.
