Business Spotlight: MangoBean Serves Up Gourmet Coffee, Frozen Yogurt

After two successful years in Mars, Don Speicher, a graduate and owner of Supremo’s Pizza, decided to expand his kitchen—and his business right along with it.

“I wanted it to be more open,” he said. 

So in May, the Speicher family opened MangoBean, a combination frozen yogurt and gourmet coffee shop, adjacent to their remodeled pizzeria in the Brickyard Plaza off Route 228.

Speicher’s son, Steve Speicher, who manages the MangoBean side of the business, said the family-run business is the only combination pizza/coffee/frozen yogurt shop he knows of in the area.

All the yogurts in the shop are self-serve, and Steve Speicher said the family prides itself only providing only the highest quality products. He is just as meticulous when it comes to picking the flavors he feels will appeal most to customers.

“We like to cater our stuff to the better taste,” he said. ‘We want it to be more like ice cream.”

The traditional “Fancy French Vanilla” as well as more exotic flavors like "Red Velvet Cake" and the popular "Sea Salt Caramel Pretzel" are among some of the shop’s rotational flavors. There also are 51 toppings available, including cheesecake bites, cookie dough, fruits and other goodies.

“We put a lot of thought into what we do,” Steve Speicher said.

The shop’s selection of coffees is just as varied. MangoBean offers a bevy of coffees, lattes and cappuccinos as well as the JavaFreeze, the shop’s take the Frappuccino. There also are protein shakes and smoothies.

“We make our own whipped cream, too,” Steve Speicher said.

For the Speichers, who live in Ross Township, operating the business truly is a family affair.

Don Speicher’s son, Ryan, 14, and daughter, Jessica, a 20-year-old college student, also work in the shops. His wife, Gayle Speicher, handles the books and is responsible for the bright and cheerful décor at both businesses.

It also was Gayle Speicher who designed MangoBean’s lounge room, a comfy area where customers can sit on couches to enjoy their coffees and frozen treats. The owners also are in the process of constructing an outdoor patio.

Open for less than two months, MangoBean already is a hit with customers who’ve tried the products.

“It’s wonderful,” said Sandy Kennedy, who lives just up the road from the shop. “We’ve brought quite a few people over and we all like it.”

Her granddaughter, Erin Pennington, concurred. She noted MangoBean reminds her of her favorite frozen yogurt shop in California.

“It’s the closest thing I’ve gotten to Pinkberry,” she said.

Since they opened in Mars, Supremo's Pizza—which delivers to Mars, Valencia, Treesdale, Seven Fields and parts of Cranberry—has been heavily involved in local fundraisers, particularly those for the Mars Area School District. For MangoBean, Don Speicher said he plans to do the same.

“Everything we do is really all about the kids,” he said.
