Family-Friendly

Pittsburgh is well known for its colleges and bars. But who knew so close to the city could be so kid-friendly, as well? I have a 2 year old daughter, and we love going out and exploring and finding out what the area has to offer. We have a weekly routine of gymnastics (at Jewart's Gymnastics and Pittsburgh Climb North) and story time at the library. (We go to the Carnegie Library in Lawrenceville because its closer to our home, but there are numerous other ones in the area including the Shaler North Hills Library and Northland Public Library). Libraries are much more than just books today - they are equiped with computers, DVDs, CDs, and audio books. They also offer many activities for all ages throughout the year. Some even offer evenings of music and dancing. I make it a habit to check out what the local libraries are offering and when.

The north hills also has easy access to the Pittsburgh Zoo and PPG Aquarium. We have a season pass and go there as much as we can. There are even special areas for kids where there are slides and jungle gyms they can play on. They also offer classes and camps for kids of all ages throughout the summer months. At Christmas time, they offer breakfast with Santa, they have a costume parade for Halloween, and penguin walks during the winter. (They bring the penguins outside to parade in the walkway and mingle with the guests)

As I have mentioned in my recent post, North Park is a fantastic way to spend some time with family. From a par 3 golf course to a swimming pool, lake, and numerous playgrounds for the kids, there is something for everyone. They even just added a Zip Line and Treetop Adventure course. This is more for the thrill-seekers, but children as young as 10 can participate. (More to come on North Park!)

One last big business I would like to touch on in this post, Wildwood Family Fun Center is so much fun! They offer laser tag, mini golf, go karts, bumper boats, water wars, an arcade, and a miniature amusement park for the little ones. There is also snow tubing during the winter months. If you are looking for a place where everyone in the family can have something to keep them occupied for a day, go to Wildwood. Check out their website (http://www.wildwoodpa.com/) before going, as they offer special coupons and deals on certain days of the week.

We also have numerous playgrounds, movie theatres, Chuck E Cheese, pet stores (We love to go and look at the animals!) and the list goes on. During the summer you can always find a fair or carnival around the area to take the kids to. Not to mention the individual fund raisers and "family fun days" that local groups offer. It is also a short drive to Kennywood and Sandcastle. Starting tomorrow (June 30) Kennywood is hosting its annual Celebrate America! days. Through July 5th, there are numerous activities going on inside the park including live entertainment, Wiener Races (Dachshunds), a hot dog eating contest, an antique car show, and fireworks every night.

The North Hills is a very family-friendly community. Bring your family and take advantage of all it has to offer!
