Fire Damages North Hills Home

Two people inside escaped unharmed.

A kitchen fire at 301 Perrymont Road near the border with McCandless chased a family from their home Wednesday afternoon.

"Once our units got there we had a hand line going through the front door and they were able to keep it contained to the kitchen and the back porch," said Shawn O'Brien, Deputy Chief of the Highland Volunteer Fire Department.

The homeowners, a man and his wife, were able to get out of the house safely. No one was hurt.

"All things considered, for a daylight call, when we have fairly limited resources, we got nice turnout from those in the neighborhood, those who were home today, crews that showed up did a good job in saving the rest of the house," said O'Brien.

The exact cause of the fire remains under investigation, but the couple told witnesses they had been cooking, in preparation for a trip.
