WADJDA is a drama from Saudi Arabia. Wadjda is a fun loving ten year old girl, who has her heart set on riding a green bicycle. Her mother will not allow it fearing repercussions from a society that sees bicycles as dangerous to a girl’s virtues. Being the rebel she is, Wadjda still wants the bicycle. The school is having a Qu’ran contest and Wadjda decides to enter it with the intention of using the winnings to purchase her bike. “Wadjda” is a simple story, with many layers. The severity of life for women is freely presented with the hypocrisy of men, who are in power, exposed. Everything is done with a gentle and loving touch, as the director believes that it is better to effect change with kindness. Winner of 18 awards and 17 nominations, this is the first feature film totally shot in Saudi Arabia. It is also the first film by a Saudi women. How she made this film is almost as interesting as the film itself. Come join us. No reservation is required and refreshments will be served.
