New Barbershop Opening In Ross

The Barbers Edge is co-owned by son of wrestling great Bruno Sammartino

The son of wrestling legend Bruno Sammartino is opening a new barbershop in the North Hills.

Dan Sammartino and partner Ron Carroll are hosting a grand opening Sunday, April 1 at The Barbers Edge. Their shop is located at 3471 Babcock Boulevard, across from Johnstone Supply Company.

Sammartino has been cutting hair for 20 years but this is the first time he’s owned his own shop. “There are so many beauty salons around but no true barber shops. So Ron and I decided to open up a true, men’s place where we use the old school straight razors and do old style barbering,” he said.

Sports memorabilia adorn the walls and customers can wait in leather couches and chairs. “We wanted to go with a sports theme,” Sammartino said. “We wanted it to be a true men’s place, where men can come and feel comfortable.”

With the retirement of barbers in the Northway Mall and , Sammartino and his partner sensed a void in the North Hills area. “You have chains opening and they advertise their barber shops, but they’re not barber shops. They’re cosmetologists. But to truly do men’s hair, correctly, you have to be a barber,” said Sammartino.

Both Sammartino and Carroll attended barber’s school. Carroll has been cutting hair for 12 years, but like his partner, this is the first time he’s owned his own shop.

Wrestling champ Bruno Sammartino, Ms. Pennsylvania/America 2012, Debbie Drodge Baumiller, and TV personality “Chilly Billy” Cardille will be among the special guests greeting customers at Sunday’s grand opening from 1 – 4 p.m.
