North Hills High School to Host Science, Technology, Engineering and Math Career Symposium

North Hills High School will host a Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) Career Symposium for hundreds of local high school students from throughout Allegheny County on Jan. 30.

The symposium will allow students an opportunity to interact with professionals in science, technology, engineering and math fields while exploring career opportunities.

Students from Avonworth, Cornell, Montour, Moon Area, North Hills, Quaker Valley and West Allegheny high schools will hear a keynote address from Marcellus Shale Corporation’s Community Outreach Manager Joy Ruff, who will highlight the job creation in STEM fields created by the oil and natural gas industries. Other local students will be connected and able to interact with symposium attendees and speakers via video conferencing technology.

Additional informational panels will feature Pittsburgh Steelers Technology Coordinator Scott Phelps, WTAE-TV Meteorologist Ashley Dougherty, Carnegie Mellon University Professor of Naval Science and U.S. Naval Academy graduate Capt. Thomas M. Calabrese, University of Pittsburgh Swanson School of Engineering’s Assistant Dean of Engineering and Product Innovation Executive Director Schohn Shannon and Builders Guild Executive Director Jason Fincke among many others including North Hills School District alumni such as David Clark, engineer with Bettis Atomic Power Laboratory; Ed Reith, Principal Engineer at 4moms.com and Katie O'Brian, an actuarial analyst with Nationwide.

Attendees also will be able to view displays of various aspects of STEM fields in a special open forum area featuring local and national businesses.
