McCandless’ Teresa O’Rourke and Wexford’s Mike Byrnes will be joining other members of the community in the fight against lung cancer for the Pennsylvania Lung Cancer Partnership’s inaugural “Free to Breathe” 5K/1-mile walk in Pittsburgh on Sunday.
Teresa is the driving force behind the event coming to Pittsburgh and she will be walking in memory of her late father this Father’s Day. He passed away from lung cancer in 1996. Mike lives just a stone’s throw from where the event will take place and had walked the same course with his wife countless times before she lost her battle to lung cancer.
For more information about the event on Sunday, please see the media advisory below.
PITTSBURGH JOINS THE FIGHT AGAINST LUNG CANCER
Inaugural Free to Breathe 5K/1-Mile Walk Raises Awareness and Critically Needed Funds
WHAT: The first ever Free to Breathe Lung Cancer 5K/1-mile walk in Pittsburgh will take place on Sunday, June 16 (Father’s Day) to raise awareness and critically needed funds for the fight against lung cancer. Lung cancer survivors, fighters, family members and friends will join together to walk for a cause.
Lung cancer kills more U.S. men and women than any other cancer. Every day, the disease takes the lives of 450 people in the U.S. which equates to about 19 Americans every hour or 1 every three minutes. Perhaps the most sobering statistic of all is that the five-year survival rate for lung cancer is only 15.7% and this number has remained unchanged for more than 40 years – greatly due to the relative lack of research funding.
Sponsored by the Pennsylvania Lung Cancer Partnership, proceeds from Free to Breathe will benefit lung cancer research, education and awareness programs.
