North Hills School District Back To School Guide 2018

ROSS TOWNSHIP, PA - As your children probably are immersed in summer vacation fun at the moment, going back to school probably is the furthest thing from their minds. But it shouldn’t be that way for parents, as the 2018-19 school year will be here before you know it.

Classes begin in the North Hills School District on August 21. What follows is a handy resource the district has provided that should answer most questions you might have regarding the start of school.

Orientations, Curriculum Nights and Open Houses

Elementary Schools for New Students in Grades 1 to 6:

• Highcliff Elementary: Aug. 17, 5-6 p.m.
• McIntyre Elementary: Aug. 15, 4- 5 p.m.
• Ross Elementary: Aug. 15, 4-5 p.m.
• West View Elementary: Aug. 15 - 6 to 7 p.m.

Elementary Curriculum Night for Grades 1- 6 will be Aug. 30 from 6 to 8 p.m. in all elementary buildings.

Kindergarten

• Kindergarten Parent Orientation (parents only): Aug. 16, 6:30 to 8 p.m. in all elementary buildings..
• Kindergarten Student Orientation: August 17, 9 to 10 a.m. in all elementary buildings.

Secondary Schools

• North Hills High School
  • July 25, 1 and 6 p.m: Orientation for Grade 9 and new NHSD students.
  • August 8, 10 a.m.: Orientation for Grade 9 and new NHSD students.
  • August 29 , 6:30 to 9:30 p.m: Open House.
• North Hills Middle School
  • August 16, 6 to 8 p.m.: Grade 7 Orientation and Curriculum Night for parents and students.
  • August 16, 6 to 8 p.m.: Grade 8 New Student Orientation.
  • August 23, 6 to 8 p.m. - Grade 8 Middle School Curriculum Night for parents.

School Day Schedules

Elementary Schools

• Highcliff Elementary – 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.
• McIntyre Elementary - 9:15 a.m. to 3:45 p.m.
• Ross Elementary – 9:15 a.m. to 3:45 p.m.
• West View Elementary – 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Morning Care and Before-School Care is available at Highcliff and West View elementary schools starting at 6:45 a.m. and at McIntyre and Ross Elementary Schools starting at 7:15 a.m. The Morning Care program costs $3.50 per day.
After-School Care is available until 6 p.m.

Secondary Schools

• North Hills High School – 7:20 a.m. to 2 p.m.
• North Hills Middle School – 7:50 a.m. to 2:50 p.m.

Transportation

Transportation postcards indicating student bus stops with pick up and drop off times will be mailed the week of August 6. If you are aware that your student will need a bus stop change, please notify the district as soon as possible.
Parents can request a bus stop change for their child by completing an online bus stop change request form on our Transportation website. The form will be automatically emailed to the transportation office. All requests must include student's name, home phone number, school, grade, current bus stop, requested bus stop and reason for the request.

Project Connect

Project Connect will expand into Grade 10 this year and will now provide iPads to all students in Grades 6 to 10. Important Project Connect dates include:

• Grades 7, 8 , 9 and 10
  • See above orientation and curriculum night Dates for specific dates and times. An overview of Project Connect will be provided at each of these events.
  • First week of school: Grade 7 and 8 students will receive iPads.
  • Second week of school: Grade 9 and 10 students will receive iPads..
• Grade 6
  • August 22: Grade 6 Parent Meeting and iPad Distribution - 6:30 p.m. in NHMS Auditorium. More information about this meeting will be forthcoming.
