North Hills School District Warns Students About Expensive Honors Organizations

The district says membership in these organizations does not have a substantial impact on admittance to a university.

The following information was provided by North Hills School District Communications Coordinator Amanda Hartle.

In recent weeks, North Hills students have received material at their home addresses regarding memberships to organizations such as the National Honor Society of High School Scholars.

There are a number of student-recognition organizations with substantial membership fees such as NSHSS that are not affiliated or endorsed by North Hills School District.

North Hills High School has surveyed more than 50 college admission representatives, including Ivy League schools, to determine the impact of these organizations on acceptance to their school.

We have learned that membership in these organizations does not have a substantial impact on admittance to a university. Students and parents are asked to research these organizations to determine if membership is beneficial to a student's future.

North Hills does not release student information to these organizations. Outside agencies are able to purchase directory information from the College Board after students take the PSAT/NMSQT as students often check a box providing the College Board with permission to distribute student information. Students also may have provided information to other agencies who also are able to sell the information.
