North Hills Trail Park To Open On Earth Day

Fifty-three acre site in Ross to be a haven for hikers, bikers.

A desolate 53 acres of Ross Township property is about to go from spooky to spiffy.

Work begins this week to transform the vacant property along Cemetery Lane into a park-like setting with two miles of hiking and biking trails. The trail park will be located near the township public works building as well as the three resting places for which Cemetery Lane is named: West View, North Side and United cemeteries.

The as-yet unnamed park will be one of nearly two dozen community parks in the township. But unlike those places, the park will have no equipment and will be used exclusively for hiking and biking.

In February, township commissioners hired the Hollow Oak Land Trust of Moon for $3,220 to design and supervise construction of the trails. The trust is a nonprofit conservation organization that owns five conservation areas of more than 400 acres in Moon, Kennedy, Franklin Park, North Fayette and Hopewell.

Volunteers will build the trail park and are expected to complete it quickly. The township plans to officially open it on April 22 - Earth Day.
