Should North Hills Get Rid Of Its Indian Mascot?

ROSS TOWNSHIP, PA — Less than a week after The Washington Post demanded that the Washington Redskins to change the team's name, the North Hills School District is grappling with the same issue regarding the Indians name and mascot for its sports teams.

The district on Tuesday issued a statement on the issue:

"In recent weeks, the North Hills School District has received some messages about changing the district’s ascot. We also understand similar conversations have been ongoing on
social media in private groups and on personal pages.

"At this time, amid the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, our top priority is the safe reopening of our schools for the 2020-21 school year.

"While we appreciate the concern from those who have taken the time to reach out to us directly, we, likeall school districts, must remain focused on safely getting our students and teachers back into the classroom in August.

"While the mascot is not on the agenda to be discussed at our school board meeting on June 30 or any school board meeting in the immediate future, we are fully open to working together to identify and combat inequalities that exist in our district to ensure North Hills provides a safe, caring and equitable educational environment for all, and we hope our new diverse and
anti-racism task force will help us accomplish this.

"The June 30 meeting is a continuation of our June 11 meeting to allow administrators to
discuss our plans for returning to school and resuming athletics and activities.

"We thank you in advance for allowing us to focus our efforts at this time on getting our students
safely back into our buildings with face-to-face, top quality instruction from our teachers."
