The Buddy System: Working Out With a Partner

Many people find it hard to stay motivated to exercise regularly.  A good way to help with this is to find an exercise partner. Here are some of the advantages:

·         No excuses: It is easy to say, “I just do not feel like exercising today,” or to make another excuse for not showing up at the gym.  An exercise partner makes it more difficult to get away with this.  Your partner can help you stay on track. Your exercise partner can also remind you of your goals and can push you to reach them.

·         Makes the time go faster: For those who think that time just drags on when they are exercising, a good partner can help make the hours go faster with interesting conversation. Try to choose an exercise partner who has some of the same goals and interests as you, inside and outside of the gym.

·         A spotter: When exercising with a partner, you can challenge yourself safely with the amount of weight you choose, because you have someone to spot you.

·         Encouragement: An exercise partner can help to encourage you to try exercises that you would normally not participate in.  For example, some people find it intimidating to go to a Zumba class because they have never tried it before.  With an exercise partner, however, you are able to have the comfort of having that other person to eliminate your fears and anxiety.
