Traffic Alert: PennDOT Not Taking The Weekend Off

Ramp work this weekend, and a major bridge closes on Monday.

and residents planning to head downtown, towards the South Hills, or east toward Monroeville will want to know about these construction projects.  

Crosstown Boulevard/Veterans Bridge (I-579)

The ramps connecting I-579 (Crosstown Boulevard) to the Liberty Bridge will be closed from 8 p.m. on Friday through 6 a.m. on Monday. In addition, the southbound I-579 Veterans Bridge will be restricted to a single lane this weekend for expansion dam replacements.

Parkway East (I-376)
Squirrel Hill Tunnel Rehabilitation
Traffic in the inbound Squirrel Hill Tunnel on the Parkway East will be restricted to a single lane from 9 p.m. Friday to 10 a.m. Saturday for tunnel rehabilitation work.

Roadway improvements
Work to improve the inbound Parkway East between Grant Street and the Stanwix Street on-ramp – the area known as the “bathtub” along the Mon Wharf  - will continue from 9 p.m. Friday through approximately 6 a.m. on Saturday. Westbound I-376 and the ramp from Grant Street to westbound I-376 will be closed. Crews will be performing repairs in the tunnel that carries Grant Street over I-376 and sawing and sealing pavement joints.

31st Street Bridge Long-Term Closure Begins Monday
The 31st Street Bridge will be closed to all traffic long-term beginning on Monday, July 2.

The closure will occur from approximately 6 a.m. on Monday around-the-clock through late December. Traffic wishing access Herrs Island from Lawrenceville will be detoured using the 16th Street Bridge to River Avenue. 

Crews will remove and replace the last four spans on the north end of bridge necessary to create a new grade-separated interchange with Route 28 and Rialto Street. These four spans were not rehabilitated as part of the 31st Street Bridge project completed in 2007 in anticipation of the future improvements on Route 28.
