Tunnel Closing, Ramps Shut Down, PennDOT Planning Busy Weekend

Detour signs will abound for residents of North Hills heading downtown, to the South Hills, or east to Monroeville.

A warning for and residents: choose your route carefully this weekend. Several key roads, ramps, and a tunnel will be closed.

Below is a summary of the major closings and restrictions this weekend, courtesy of PennDOT:

Parkway East
Tunnel rehabilitation
The inbound Squirrel Hill Tunnel on the Parkway East will be closed from 9 p.m. on Friday through 5 a.m. on Monday for rehabilitation work. The outbound (eastbound) tunnel will remain open.

Bridge inspection
Work to inspect the Smithfield Street Bridge over eastbound I-376 will occur from 6 a.m. to noon Saturday. Single lane closures will occur on eastbound I-376 in the area under the Smithfield Street Bridge (near Grant Street Exit 71A).

Fort Pitt/Fort Duquesne Bridge Ramps
Resurfacing
Ramps from Fort Pitt Bridge to Fort Duquesne Boulevard and the 10th Street Bypass and the ramp ramp from southbound Fort Duquesne Bridge to Fort Duquesne Boulevard will be closed from 10 p.m. Friday until 5 a.m. Monday.

I-579/Crosstown Boulevard/Veterans Bridge
Ramp improvements
The ramp from the inbound Liberty Bridge to northbound I-579 (Crosstown Boulevard) will be closed to allow crews to continue wall rehabilitation from 8 p.m. on Friday through 6 a.m. on Monday. Note: the ramp will reopen from 5:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. Saturday to accommodate traffic attending the concert at Consol Energy Center.  

The HOV lanes on the Parkway North (I-279) will be closed this weekend for the Pittsburgh Triathlon.
