What's Closed on Labor Day?

Here's some useful information on what you can and cannot do on the upcoming holiday.

The unofficial end of summer is this weekend, with the Labor Day Holiday. 

The first observance of Labor Day is believed to have been a parade of 10,000 workers on Sept. 5, 1882, in New York City. Peter J. McGuire, a Carpenters and Joiners Union secretary, organized the event.

By 1893, more than half the states were observing Labor Day on one day or another. Congress passed a bill to establish a federal holiday in 1894. President Grover Cleveland signed the bill soon afterward, designating the first Monday in September as Labor Day.

These days, most people celebrate Labor Day by taking time off from work, doing a little relaxing or maybe catching one last day at the pool. With that in mind, here’s a look at what’s closed in the area.

State offices, state liquor stores, and Pennsylvania drivers' license and photo centers will be closed.

Allegheny county offices and courts will be closed, along with federal offices and courthouses. Labor day is also the last day Allegheny County's public pools will be open this year. 

The Port Authority of Allegheny County on Monday will operate all bus, light-rail and incline service on a holiday schedule during Labor Day.
