Lehigh Carbon
Community College (LCCC) uses the key guiding principles of the Reggio Emilia
approach at its training seminar 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., Saturday, April 5, at
the 27th annual Week of the
Young Child, in the Community Services Center on LCCC’s main campus in
Schnecksville, Pa.
Keynote
presentation “Teaching the Reggio Way: What is it? How do you do it?” will be
led by LCCC’s Teacher Education Department, as they inspire participants
through use of hands-on recycled and natural materials and vibrant photographs
of real classrooms. Two breakout sessions follow with topics on exploring
science, assessing math skills and development, supporting cognitive
development, and much more. Fee is $30 per person or $15 per student.

LCCC’s annual
“Week of the Young Child” (WOTYC), held April 5-12, continues on April 7 at
6:30 p.m. with a workshop that identifies different types of rating scales used
in the classroom. Cost is $5.

A free
children’s event on April 8 at 10 a.m. features Robbi Hall Kumalo, a Lincoln
Center for Aesthetic Education Professional Teaching Artist. Robbi K has been
performing and working to develop young audiences by producing joyous and
exhilarating programs for children through her artistic approach of combining
music, theater and culture with a worldview different from the Euro-centric
norm. At 11 a.m., all are then invited to participate in a tree-planting
ceremony at the LCCC Early Learning Center playground.
A free family
movie night, sponsored by LCCC’s Early Learning Center and Student Government
Association, will be held on Friday, April 11, features “Frozen” at 6 p.m.,
with “Monsters University” immediately following. Seating is limited; RSVP to geden@lccc.edu or 610-799-1146.
Connected to the
Week of the Young Child events is a free workshop for high school students
interested in elementary education on Friday, March 28. Local high school
students spend the morning attending interactive workshops on guiding young
children in learning.
The high school
student workshop and the children’s morning programs are free and open to the
public. Preregistration is needed for all WOTYC events. Registration deadline
is March 31.
