Teen Badly Hurt in Head-On Crash Near Leather Corner Post Hotel

Macungie teen goes into opposite lane on Kernsville Road, collides with oncoming vehicle; second driver suffers 'moderate injury.'

An 18-year-old Macungie man suffered a "major injury" Monday afternoon in a head-on crash involving two SUVs on Kernsville Road east of the Leather Corner Post Hotel in Lowhill Township, police said.

A 1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee driven by Tyler Silverstein "for unknown reasons" went into the opposite lane and collided with a 2009 Chevrolet Equinox, state police at Fogelsville said. The time of the crash was 3:40pm.

Silverstein was taken by Northern Valley EMS to Lehigh Valley Hospital-Cedar Crest. Also taken by Northern Valley to the same hospital was the Equinox driver, Cheryl A. Durich, 45, of Walnutport, who suffered a "moderate injury," a state police fax said.

The crash occurred at 6607 Kernsville Road, which is in Lowhill and has an Orefield mailing address. Silverstein's Jeep was southbound and Durich's Equinox was northbound.

Silverstein will be cited for careless driving, the fax said.
