Raub's Farm Market Wants Corn Maze Hours Extended

Palmer Township supervisors worry about the impact of late-night operations to nearby residents from Raub's Farm Market's corn maze.

It's three months before Labor Day, but Raub's Farm Market is already planning its traditional corn maze in the fall.

The business is expected before the zoning board next week to request an expansion of the hours for its corn maze.

Raub's is asking the zoning board for an extension of the hours for the corn maze from the Labor Day weekend to the first weekend after Halloween. It used to operate the corn maze from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday through Sunday.

Now Raub's has requested a 9 a.m. start and 10 p.m. closing but operating the maze seven days a week.

Township Supervisors Chairman Dave Colver had asked the township's police chief and fire chief to see what complaints were filed regarding the corn maze operation in the past.

They found none.

But the extended hours seemed to be a concern.

"What if they lose someone in the corn maze at night?" Supervisor Robert Smith wondered.

"The intersection there isn't well-lit," Supervisor K. Michael Mitchell stated. Raub's is at 1459 Tatamy Road.

Smith said that neighbors were concerned about the corn maze before, but those concerns may escalate if it stays open until 10 p.m.

"There's going to be more noise and everything and people will be coming home from work. That's my only concern," Smith said.

Colver said he didn't mind the maze being open for the entire week or the earlier start time. It was the late closing that worried him.

"I don't like them going late at night," he said. "Do we want to be a part of this or have the zoning officer express our concerns about the night hours?"

Supervisor Bob Lammi and Colver suggested maybe an end time of 8 p.m.

The zoning board meets Tuesday June 5.
