Sheetz Convenience Store Construction Accelerates

The Sheetz gas station/convenience store, expected to be completed by Thanksgiving, is moving at a faster pace, Palmer Township officials have learned.

Forget Thanksgiving.

The Sheetz gas station/convenience store on Route 248, expected to be completed by Thanksgiving, may be ready before Halloween.

The Palmer Township Board of Supervisors learned Tuesday night that the project is progressing at an "accelerated" pace.

Sept. 30 is a date in which the site's developer and PennDOT are seeking to complete some project improvements and get a traffic light installed at Kingston Road and Route 248.

"Estimates of November/December for completion didn't meet with Sheetz's schedule," Planning Director Cynthia Carman told supervisors at Tuesday night's meeting.

The township went out to bid for work on the traffic signal. Carman said four bids were received. But a few came in for "accelerated" work.

"There was an Option B to get the work done quicker," Carman said.

That bid of $142,839.50 was awarded to Armour & Sons Electric.

Carman said a time frame of Sept. 30 was set to get the traffic light installed and then have 30 days to test the lights.

"This project is very time sensitive," she added.

Supervisors Chairman Dave Colver said developers put money into a pot for such projects. He said the traffic light would be covered by developers and that "not one penny of taxpayer money" is being used.

Meanwhile, Strausser Enterprises—the developer of the Northwood Center—has requested an extension to Sept. 30 for improvements like plantings and sidewalks around the CVS, which opened in January, Solicitor Charles Bruno said.

Work on the new Sheetz gas station/convenience store—the second phase in the Northwood Center development—is really taking shape.

Not only is the building up and under way, but the structure for the gas station just popped up the other day.

In the past month, crews have cleared and leveled land around the parcel by Route 248 and Kingston Road and started working on the foundation for the structure.

Strausser officials have said the new Sheetz would be the largest Sheetz convenience store in the Lehigh Valley.
