Tru Salon & Spa Opens In Palmer Township

Two Palmer residents run an all-female ensemble of stylists, massage therapists and aestheticians.

Just a few weeks ago, on Oct. 1, Amy Grube and Marissa Bates realized their ambitions when they opened Tru Salon & Spa in Palmer Township.

“We talked about it for a while, and then this place became available. It was kind of perfect,” said Bates, a hair stylist by trade. “We wanted to bring a big salon to Palmer… there’s nothing like this on this side.”

And it is big -- deceptively large inside, with a wide accommodating floor space and separated stylists chairs. In the rear is the color bar, an area for guests to get color treatments while sipping wine and chatting with other patrons.

“I think it’s the best part of the salon,” said Bates about the color bar. “It’s very fun.”

The salon, which is on Northwood Avenue next to , is located in a former country store that had to be completely redesigned for its transformation into a spa setting. New floors were installed, the walls were repainted, and nearly everything but the lighting was changed over.

Due to the diverse staff, the salon and spa is able to offer a variety of services that includes waxing, facials, massage, spray-tans, teeth whitening, nails, hair and makeup.

“We’re also going to offer girls nights, if they want to come in groups,” said Bates. Tru Salon will offer drinks and snacks for group visits, whether it be a bridal party of just a girls night out.

And right now the salon is offering a special: First-time clients can get 20 percent off.

Both Grube and Bates are Palmer residents -- nearly neighbors, in fact, who live in the Fox Hill Estates development just off Van Buren Road.

“We figured out, we have a little over 30 years of experience between the two of us,” said Grube, who ran a salon from her home before partnering with Bates to open Tru Salon.

Tru Salon & Spa is at 3421 Northwood Ave. and is open Tuesday and Wednesday from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., Thursday and Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Saturday, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. It is closed Sunday and Monday.

The salon carries Identity 1 products, Kenra Platinum line, and Paul Mitchell for both men and women. It accepts walk-in hair appointments; aesthetics and massage therapy is by-appointment only.

As for the name, Bates explained: “I think it’s inspiring people to be true to themselves… and in return, we’ll be true to you.”
