What's Going Around? - Heart Health

February is American Heart Month, and a good time to improve your heart health.

Valentine’s Day may be about affairs of the heart, but February is all about keeping your heart healthy. Think about all of the people in your life. Now think about the things you and they do to prevent heart disease. Is it enough? American Heart Month is a good time to improve your heart health.

Here are three things everyone can do to lower their risk of heart disease:

  • Control your blood pressure and cholesterol – Eat foods low in saturated fat, trans fat, added sugar, and sodium. It is also a good idea to eat at least five servings of fresh fruits and vegetables every day. Regular blood pressure screenings will help keep you on track.
  • Exercise – Exercise is important for a healthy heart and a trimmer waistline, so give your special someone something that will make their workout more enjoyable this Valentine’s Day. Try sports gear, a new workout outfit, or a gym membership. The National Institutes of Health (NIH) recommends at least two and a half hours of moderate-intensity physical activity a week.
  • Kick the habit – Give up smoking for your loved one or help them kick the habit themselves.
