Driveway 'Disappears' from Sullivan Trail Home

Family gets zoning approval to remove driveway, which backs onto Sullivan Trail.

Timothy and Ticciani Jancar, asked the on Monday for a variance to relocate their garage and driveway. And the board agreed.

The Jancars live at 953 Sullivan Trail, with the driveway backing out onto busy Sullivan Trail.

“It’s very stressful backing out of that driveway,” Timothy Jancar said.

Jancar said that he is used to it, but it is hard for his visitors.

The Jancars' architect, Schawki Milan, with an office in Easton, told the board that the Jancars want to move the driveway entrance to the Fairfield Avenue side of the house. They also want to remove the detached garage and build a new one attached to the house.

Timothy Weis, the code enforcement and zoning officer, said the current driveway entrance really is a problem.

“I would love to see that driveway disappear,” Weis said.

The ordinance, however, requires a minimum 25-foot, side yard setback. The new garage would be only 20 feet from the property line, and that’s the reason a variance was need.

The Jancars plan to landscape the yard where the driveway is now with a walkway and grading to resolve a flooding issue.

The swell on that side of the property tends to overflow, Milan said. The house doesn’t have a basement, so the water comes into the first floor. They have had to replace rugs more than once, Ticciani Jancar said.

The zoning board unanimously approved the variance for the addition.
