Camp Rainbow Inc. Nets $19K from Fundraiser, Readies for Camping Season

Registrations are being accepted for the camping season, which begins on June 21.

Montgomery County’s overnight camp for deserving children has reached its fundraising goal as a result of a recent casino night fund drive.

Camp Rainbow Inc. Director Alex Fizz said the fundraiser, which was held earlier this month, generated a little more than $19,000. Fizz said camp representatives were hoping to raise somewhere between $15,000 and $20,000.

“People were so generous with their money and with their time,” he said. “We definitely met our goal.”

The next task at hand is to finish camp registrations for the upcoming season, which begins on June 21 and continues through Aug. 7. So far, close to 300 kids have registered for the week-long overnight camp. The goal, according to Fizz, is to enroll 490 campers.

This season’s campers will be able to experience a night environmental education program. Campers will be able to study bull frogs, muskrats, deer, foxes and other night-time creatures as part of the new addition.

“We thought it would be exciting to try it at night,” Fizz said, adding that a similar program was put in place for daytime hours last season.

Before camp opens this season, Fizz said small upgrades are planned.

For this season, more staff members are Camp Rainbow Inc. former campers – and that’s exactly the way Fizz likes it.

“I’ve wanted to continue to bring in more and more students who were with us,” Fizz said. “I want as many of those members of our staff as possible.”
