Camp Rainbow Inc. Seeks More Campers

Are you looking for something for your kid to do this summer? For Montgomery County children, that something could be an overnight camping experience at Camp Rainbow Inc.

The 63-year-old Montgomery County-based camp, which is located on the Perkiomen Creek, has openings for boys and girls ages 7 to 16 in each of the age-specific week-long sessions, according to board member Tom Johnson. Click here to see when your son or daughter could attend.

Camp opened for the season on June 29 and Johnson said 50 children attended for the week with a few returning home after becoming homesick. The camp can easily house 60 children per week, he said. Week-long sessions continue through Aug. 8.

“We’d like to see more kids enjoying our arts and crafts activities, pool and water play, music education, sports and friend-building fun at the camp,” Johnson said.

Volunteers had worked last month on weekends to tidy up cabins and restrooms, rake leaves and get ready for the season. Now that the sprucing up is complete, Johnson said the goal is to fill the cabins.

The camp, which was established in 1951 for deserving Montgomery County children, has struggled the last few years to make ends meet following funding cuts and dwindling donations. It costs $267 for each camper’s week-long overnight camping experience. The camp subsidizes the bulk of those fees in addition to covering regular maintenance, salaries and the cost of camping supplies and equipment. The camp’s budget annually is roughly $160,000. A recent influx of donations and grants helped Camp Rainbow Inc. open as scheduled.
