Dr. Christopher Unger, Assistant Clinical Professor of Medicine at the George Washington University School of Medicine and Ursinus Class of 1965, will discuss the education of future doctors and the health care system they will face in a talk entitled, "The Ether of Medicine, The Fire of Politics," on Monday, February 20, 2012, at 7 p.m. in the Musser Lecture Hall in Pfahler Hall. In his talk, Dr. Unger will provide insights into the medical school application process and how applicants can gain an advantage by better understanding what medical schoolsare looking for. He will then pivot to discuss how future doctors must understand the systems – both medical and political – they will enter as doctors. He will talk about the importance of the doctor-patient relationship and the threats to that relationship from economic and political forces. Dr. Unger graduated from Ursinus College in 1965 with a Bachelor of Science before going on to receive his M.D. from the University of Pennsylvania. In addition to serving in the U.S. Navy Reserve, he served as a department chiefat the U.S. Naval Hospital after serving as a Fellow at the Children's Hospital Medical Center in Boston and at Harvard College. He then turned to teaching, serving as a preceptor at the Duke University Medical Center, Tufts University Medical Center, and currently at the George Washington University School of Medicine. Dr. Unger has testified on health care systems, patient privacy, andsmall business matters before state and federal committees. He is certified by the American Board of Family Practice (past) and is currently certified by theAmerican Board of Internal Medicine. He is a licensed physician in Maryland.
