Hollywood goes for the Golden Globes
The night featured the good, the bad and the snarky.

“The Social Network” and “The Fighter” snagged all the wins Sunday night at the 68th Annual Golden Globe Awards. Hollywood Foreign Press Association made the night possible, and the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Los Angeles, CA, was the gathering place for the celebrities. Ricky Gervais, creator of the British and American television series, “The Office,” hosted the event with scathing, sarcastic remarks that were reminiscent of a roast. He poked fun at Johnny Depp’s and Angelina Jolie’s characters in “The Tourist,” and even introduced Bruce Willis as Ashton Kutcher’s dad. Most of the stars called out Gervais on what Robert Downey Jr. his “mean-spirited remarks and sinister undertones.”
Monday morning’s talk show hosts from the “Today Show,” “The Kathie Lee and Hoda Show,” and “The View” discussed Gervais’ humor, saying it was funny, but wondering if he crossed the line. Regardless of the uncomfortable aura Gervais inspired, the Hollywood party moved on.
The main party attraction turned out to be “The Social Network,” winning a total of four awards: best director (David Fincher), best screenplay (Aaron Sorkin), best original score (from Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross), and best motion picture drama, which was the award to conclude the evening. “The Fighter” was next in line, winning awards for best supporting actor, Christian Bale, and best supporting actress, Melissa Leo. Neither “The Social Network” nor “The Fighter” was able to take the award for best actor in drama, which went to Colin Firth for “The King’s Speech.”

Two highlights from the award show were the standing ovation Michael Douglas received in honor of his battle against cancer, and the Cecil B. DeMille lifetime achievement award and film clip honoring Robert De Niro. When De Niro received his award he delivered a brilliant and funny speech. His closing comment summed up the evening’s celebration of film: “It should be up to the people to decide if it’s entertaining, up to the critics to decide if it’s good, and up to posterity to decide if it’s art.”
