Perkiomen Valley HS 'Greatly Concerned' After Locker Room Filming Incident

"We will be reviewing what additional precautionary measures can be taken to protect students while they are using school locker rooms."

The Perkiomen Valley School District is "greatly concerned" by the locker room filming incident last month which resulted in the arrest of one man, and said that they are looking at ways to protect the safety of students while in locker rooms into the future.

The bizarre incident occurred on Saturday, Feb. 18 during the Perkiomen Invitational Swim Meet.

At around 11 a.m., John Lyons Jr., of Collegeville, walked into the boys locker room in the high school and began filming students using his cell phone, state police said.

Because the meet had attracted a large number of schools, the girls locker rooms were at capacity, and many of the girls were using a boys locker room.

In a statement, Perkiomen Valley School District spokespersons said that the girls in the locker room were clothed when the man walked in, wearing either bathing suits or street clothing.

The school district said that two security officers were on duty throughout the swim meet.

"(The school) will be reviewing what additional precautionary measures can be taken to protect students’ safety while they are using school locker rooms at public sporting events," the district said. "School officials urge coaches, parents, volunteers, and students to remain vigilant while attending athletic events and to report any suspicious behavior in order to keep our students safe."

Lyons was arrested without incident and charged with invasion of privacy.
