PVHS's Ugwu In The Spotlight

Barely exposed to the sport before his junior year, he quickly developed into a football standout for the Vikings

The Mercury today has a quick and worthwhile read on Jason Ugwu, a Perkiomen Valley High School senior who enjoyed a standout senior season on the football team after first being exposed to the sport just two years ago.

Jason moved here from Nigeria with his family at age 10. When PVHS head coach Scott Reed invited him to football practice, Jason thought he was referring to soccer, which is known as "football" in most other parts of the world.

Gifted with natural athletic ability, Jason learned the game quickly.

Jason is no "dumb jock," either. He's going to graduate with a B average, a feat consistent with a growing tradition among Nigerian immigrants of emphasizing a strong educational background.

As he heads off to Wilkes University to study computer engineering and play football this fall, Jason may want to compare notes with his countryman, OgheneMaro Erhie. Like Jason, Erhie is a Nigerian expat who was only familiar with soccer before coming to the United States. (and dean's list honoree) at Bowie State.

Jason will play in the inaugural Pioneer Athletic Conference Senior Game at Phoenixville High School on Sunday.
