It’s the first week in February, so we have entered the week of the ‘Firsts.’ The first Thursday of the month is my musings on a cultural icon, past or present.
Move over Paris Hilton. The Kardashian sisters have arrived, and so filled the spot for our present cultural icons. The reigning goddess of the three is Kim Kardashian who qualifies for the majority of the pop icon status. These socialite siblings reached stardom with the E! reality television series “Keeping up with the Kardashians,” which chronicles the life of the Kardashian family, including stepdad Bruce Jenner.
In the show’s first month, it became the highest-rated series on Sunday nights for women ages 18-34 and was seen by 1.3 million viewers total. Each season brought continued success. The fourth season’s finale attracted 4.8 million viewers, which made the episode the most-watched broadcast in E! history. When it comes to the Kardashians, we need to be in the know--at least 4.8 million viewers thought so.

Besides making their millions from being followed by cameras, the Kardashian sisters have written an autobiography and started a chain of clothing boutiques called DASH. The first DASH boutique opened in 2006 in Calabasas, CA, selling designer clothing apparel, purses, jewelry, hats, shoes and other fashion accessories for women. “Kourtney and Khloe Take Miami” was a spin-off that showed two of the sisters opening another DASH boutique in Miami Beach in 2009. Most recently, yet another spin-off show, “Kourtney and Kim Take New York,” follows the opening of a DASH boutique in the SoHo district of New York City on Nov. 3, 2010.
Three sisters currently command the public eye. When we look back on the early 2000s, will the Kardashian sisters still stand out as pop culture icons? Only time and a little bit of pop culture stamina will tell.
