Five Songs for Summer

Song ideas to add to your summer playlists for poolside parties and days filled with fun in the sun.

With summer arriving, the weekends will be filled with poolside parties and relaxing days spent laying out. Below are some summer song suggestions to make those days even better, so crank up the heat and blast the tunes.

1. Sweet Home Alabama: This classic never gets old. Ed King (guitarist) overheard fellow Lynyrd Skynyrd guitarist Gary Rossington playing a guitar riff while practicing together one day. That night, the chords and two main guitar solos came to King in a dream. He introduced the song to the band the next day, and the rest is history. Perfect for any party, this song is sure to put a happy, summer mood in every person present.

2. Cough Syrup: Upcoming alternative rock band Young the Giant produced this song while they were still known as The Jakes. This song was written at a tme when the band was broke and unsigned. The artists thirsted to produce something that was out of the ordinary, and they did just that. With its uplifting beat and happy tone, this song is sure to make your summer complete.

3. (Sittin’ On) The Dock of the Bay: As a beautiful rendition by Sarah Bareilles, this song captivates the feeling of summer that everyone never wants to let go of. If you shut your eyes close enough, you may be able to picture yourself actually sitting on the dock. Hopefully, jamming to this song will give you your beach fix before you head there this summer.

4. Escape: (Also known as The Piña Colada Song) Artist Rupert Holmes made this song unforgettable. This song is perfect for any summer day, particularly one that involves a party and pina coladas. The song’s beachy feel is sure to set the mood for a summer “Escape.”

5. Put Your Records On: Corinne Bailey Rae made her debut to the music world through this song. I remember a few years ago seeing this song under the “Free On iTunes” category so I downloaded it—why not right? I immediately became infatuated with Rae’s masterpiece. You may find yourself singing along by the second chorus due to the fact this song overcomes you with the feelings of relaxation and simplicity.
