Peters Township Named to 10 Safest Cities in Pennsylvania

Peters Township has been named to a list of the 10 safest cities in Pennsylvania from real estate website Movoto.com.

Peters Township made the list, coming in at ninth. Movoto.com noticed a drastic change in the cities listed compared to 2014, stating the only location that made the list for two years running was Franklin Park in Allegheny County.

According to the list, Peters had just 117 property crimes for the entire year of 2013, giving the township the 13th lowest number of property crimes per person. Additionally, Peters had the 31st lowest number of violent crimes. When combining these two, the township had just the 12th lowest number of crimes per person overall, the website said.

In calculating the safest cities, the website used the 2013 FBI Uniform Crime Report, looking at all of the locations with populations of 10,00 or more in Pennsylvania. According to the list of safest cities, Movoto then weighed the populations with the following crimes: murders, rapes, robberies, burglaries, thefts and vehicle theft.

The aforementioned crimes were then divided into four categories: murders, violent crimes, property crimes and total crimes. After omitting areas that did not report to the FBI in 2013, Movoto’s math resulted in 214 locations across Pennsylvania.

After the crime per capita was calculated for each municipality, the locations were then ranked with a score from one to 214, with the lower scores being the safer places. Next, the website took those rankings so that murders, violent crimes, and property crimes each made up 30 percent of the overall score, where the total number of crimes accounted for just 10 percent, Movoto.com said. Finally, the agency averaged those weighted rankings into one overall “Big Deal Score.”
