2 Of America's Best Pizza Slices Are In Philly, According To Food & Wine

Two Philadelphia restaurants are helping define the diverse American pizza landscape, Food & Wine says.

PHILADELPHIA — Two of the most essential slices defining the American pizza landscape can be found in Philadelphia, according to a new list.

Food & Wine recently named the "27 Best Pizzas in America Right Now." The featured slices are meant to provide a snapshot of modern innovations to the culinary classic.

"For the rest of us, all of this means that there’s never been a better moment to eat pizza in America," writes Food & Wine's Joshua David Stein. "The pizza scene today is brighter, more diverse, and more delicious than it’s ever been."

Two slices from Philly pizzerias are contributing to this shining moment, according to Food & Wine: "No Betta Love" at Down North Pizza and the corn pizza at Pizzeria Beddia.

Down North Pizza owner Muhammad Abdul-Hadi is a West Philly native with degrees in criminal justice and law enforcement administration. Ultimately, his education inspired him to found a pizzeria that only hires formerly incarcerated people, with the goal of reducing recidivism rates in the Black community on a wider scale.

The No Betta Love slice features four cheeses and "Norf" sauce — a reference to North Philadelphia, where Down North Pizza is located. The restaurant can be found at 2804 W Lehigh Ave.

Pizzeria Beddia specializes in pizza, small plates and wine. The small, standing room-only shop in Fishtown only has a few pies on the menu. But the restaurant is no stranger to praise, with Bon Appétit Magazine once calling it the best pizzeria in the U.S.

Food & Wine gave love to the corn pizza, a summer option with roasted corn in a cream sauce and marinated cherry tomatoes.

Pizzeria Beddia is located at 1313 North Lee St.
