3 Philly-Area Natives Earn 2022 Oscar Nominations

Philadelphia's own Will Smith and Ahmir "Questlove" Thompson, along with Malvern's Adam McKay, are all up for Academy Awards this year.

PHILADELPHIA — Three Philadelphia-area sons have garnered Oscar nods.

Nominees for the 2022 Academy Awards were announced Tuesday.

Among the nominees are Philadelphia's own Will Smith and Ahmir "Questlove" Thompson, as well as Malvern's Adam McKay.

Smith is in the running for Best Actor and Best Picture for the biopic "King Richard," which tells the story of Richard Williams, father of tennis legends Venus and Serena Williams.

Smith not only starred as Williams, but also served as a producer on the film, which landed the Best Picture nod.

These nominations are Smith's third and fourth chances to bring home an Oscar, as he was nominated for Best Actor for "Ali" and "The Pursuit of Happyness."

McKay, who graduated from Great Valley High School and attended Temple University, will be vying for Best Picture against Smith for "Don't Look Up." McKay is also nominated for Best Original Screenplay for the star-studded dark comedy.

These are McKay's sixth and seventh Oscar nominations, and he previously won Best Adapted Screenplay for "The Big Short."

Lastly, The Roots' drummer Questlove is in the running for Best Documentary Feature as he "directed Summer of Soul (...Or, When the Revolution Could Not Be Televised)."

The documentary tells the story of the 1969 Harlem Cultural Festival, which featured music legends such as Stevie Wonder, B.B. King, Sly and the Family Stone, and Nina Simone, as well as civic leaders such as Jesse Jackson.

The 94th Academy Awards are set to air at 8 p.m. on Sunday, March 27 on ABC. See other viewing options online here.
