4 Killed In Shootings, Crash Over New Year Holiday In Philadelphia

Police said a Germantown banquet hall security guard fatally shot a man in self defense and a woman died in a crash on New Year's Eve.

PHILADELPHIA — Four people were killed over the New Year Holiday in Philadelphia in three separate shootings and a vehicle crash, according to police.

First, a 59-year-old man was fatally stabbed on New Year's Eve in an apartment on the 9600 block of Bustleton Avenue, police said.

The man was found in the apartment's kitchen at about 4:01 p.m. Tuesday, with 15 to 20 stabs wounds. Police did not recover a weapon and did not make any arrests.

Then at about 8:15 p.m. Tuesday, officers responded to a report of a person with a gun at a banquet hall on the 5500 Germantown Avenue.

Officers found an unresponsive male with a gunshot wound to the chest and multiple self-inflicted stab wounds. He was taken to Jefferson Einstein Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 8:25 p.m.

The man who shot him, an armed security guard for the banquet hall, said he acted in self-defense when the decedent came at him with a knife.

Police did not make any arrests.

A fatal crash then occurred at about 10:35 on New Year's Eve at 5900 Ogontz Ave.

Emergency responders were called to the area for an auto accident with injuries. Police said a 28-year-old woman taken to Einstein Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead at 11:10 p.m.

The investigation is ongoing with the Crash Investigation District.

And lastly, a man in his 30s was fatally shot at about 12:04 a.m. on New Year's Day, according to police.

The man was shot twice in the left shoulder, once in the left groin, and once in the right groin on the 6000 block of Chester Avenue at approximately 12:04 AM. He was taken by police to Penn Presbyterian Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead at 12:18 a.m.

The scene was held, but no motive has been determined, no arrests have been made, and no weapons were recovered.
