6 Philly Chefs, Restaurants Named Nominees For 2023 James Beard Awards

Back in January, 15 local restaurants, chefs, and restaurateurs were named semifinalists. Now, the list has been whittled down to just six.

PHILADELPHIA — The culinary scene in Philadelphia is well-represented in the 2023 Restaurant and Chef Awards nominees announced Wednesday by the James Beard Foundation.

Six Philadelphia chefs, restaurants, and restaurateurs have advanced in the "Oscars of the culinary arts."

Philadelphia's nominees are:

  • Friday Saturday Sunday — Outstanding Restaurant
  • Ellen Yin, High Street Hospitality Group (Fork, a.kitchen + bar, High Street, and others) — Outstanding Restaurateur
  • Amanda Shulman, Her Place Supper Club — Emerging Chef
  • Jesse Ito, Royal Sushi — Best Chef: Mid-Atlantic (DC, DE, MD, NJ, PA, VA)
  • Dionicio Jiménez, Cantina La Martina — Best Chef: Mid-Atlantic (DC, DE, MD, NJ, PA, VA)
  • Chutatip “Nok” Suntaranon, Kalaya — Best Chef: Mid-Atlantic (DC, DE, MD, NJ, PA, VA)

Back in January, these and 11 other chefs, restaurants, and restaurateurs were announced as nominees for this year's James Beard Awards.

Nominees that didn't make it to the next round include Heavy Metal Sausage (Best New Restaurant), Le Caveau (Outstanding Bar), Andrew Henshaw of Laser Wolf (Best Chef), and Emily Riddell of Machine Shop (Outstanding Pastry Chef or Baker).

The only other nominees from Pennsylvania are Kate Lasky and Tomasz Skowronski of Apteka in Pittsburgh for Best Mid-Atlantic Chef.

The James Beard Awards, first presented in 1991, recognize exceptional talent in the culinary and food media industries.

They recognize a range of experiences, from fine-dining restaurants to casual gems, in 23 categories.

Winners will be announced June 5 in a ceremony at the Lyric Opera of Chicago.
