'Abbott Elementary' Season 2 Premiers Wednesday Night

The Emmy-winning hit sitcom set in a fictional South Philly elementary school returns for its second season Wednesday night on ABC.

PHILADELPHIA — ABC's darling sitcom set in Philadelphia is making its return to prime-time television Wednesday night.

"Abbott Elementary" will debut at 9 p.m. Wednesday on ABC.

The Emmy-winning show follows second grade teacher Janine Teagues — played by the show's creator, writer, and producer Quinta Brunson who is a Philadelphia native — as she navigates the ups and downs of public education in America's poorest large city in a mockumentary format.

Co-starring in the hit show are Lisa Ann Walter, Jesse Tyler James, Janelle James, and Sheryl Lee Ralph as educators and administrators at the fictional South Philly school.

Janelle James and Ralph were nominated for the Outstanding Supporting Actress Emmy Award in the 2022 Primetime Emmys, with Ralph, who is married to Democratic Pennsylvania State Sen. Vincent Hughes, winning the award.

Ralph, whose career launched with a Tony-nominated performance in the original "Dreamgirls" show on Broadway, delivered a rousing acceptance speech at the award ceremony.

Brunson, 32, also won the Outstanding Writing for a Comedy Series Emmy, making her the first black woman to win for a show she co-created and co-wrote.

She was nominated for Outstanding Comedy Series (as an executive producer), and Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series, as well.

Brunson was named to Time's 100 most influential people list for "Abbott Elementary."
