PHILADELPHIA — A Philadelphia bagel shop was readying for a grand reopening after a March explosion closed the store. Then, it happened again.
New York Bagels, a West Philadelphia institution since 1964, suffered an explosion around 5:15 a.m. Sunday.
It was the store's second explosion in two months. The first incident injured one person, caused a fire and forced New York Bagels to temporarily close in March. It was deemed an accidental gas explosion.
New York Bagels was planning a Mother's Day grand reopening when another explosion rocked the store.
The front of the shop was completely blown off, according to a Philadelphia Fire Department spokesperson. There was no active fire, so it was placed under control quickly.
No injuries were reported.
The Fire Marshal's Office is investigating the cause.
New York Bagels (7555 Haverford Ave.) has been serving the Overbrook Park Neighborhood for over 60 years. Known for authentic New York-style bagels, they are the area's oldest Kosher institution, according to their website.
But the shop must temporarily close once again.
Citadel Credit Union, which operates in the same strip mall, has temporarily closed the Overbrook Park location.
The branch sustained "minimal damage" from the explosion, the business says.
"We are heartbroken for their team, who have worked so hard to rebuild and return to serving the Overbrook Park community," Citadel Credit Union said on social media.
