I-95 Ramp Closing Permanently In Philly; New Ramp Expected In Late 2027

The closures will begin later this month, causing major traffic shifts in the neighborhood.

PHILADELPHIA — An Interstate 95 on-ramp in Northeast Philadelphia will permanently close this month, and its replacement won't open until late next year, according to PennDOT.

Starting 8 p.m. Aug. 21, the ramp from Bridge Street to I-95 North will close for good.

A new ramp will be constructed as part of a $267.9 million project to replace the viaduct — the structure supporting the overpass — over Bridge and Tacony streets.

The project has also involved reconstructing viaducts on different parts of the interstate, improving the interchange, and improving traffic flow and safety on surface streets at the interchange in Northeast Philly, PennDOT says.

But traffic impacts from the upcoming work are expected to last a couple years.

After the ramp closes, a new on-ramp to I-95 North from Tacony Street and the Delaware Avenue extension will be constructed. It's expected to open in late 2027.

During that project, drivers will be detoured to use Tacony Street and State Road/New State Road to access the I-95 North on-ramp at Milnor Street.

A traffic shift will also take place on the night the ramp is closed. From 8 p.m. Aug. 21 to 5 a.m. the next morning, I-95 North drivers will be moved onto the newly reconstructed southbound lanes.

If the weather doesn't cooperate, that traffic shift will be rescheduled to 8 p.m. Aug. 24.

Then, reconstruction of the I-95 North lanes at the Bridge Street Interchange will begin. That's expected to be finished in Spring 2028.

Backups and delays are expected throughout construction.
