PHILADELPHIA — An off-duty Philadelphia police officer was fatally shot early Sunday in Southwest Philadelphia, officials said.
Off-duty Philadelphia Police Officer Alhassane Barry and a second man were shot around 4 a.m. near 73rd Street and Elmwood Avenue, according to NBC10.
Both men were brought to the hospital, where Barry succumbed to his injuries. He was 29.
The second man remains hospitalized, according to 6abc Action News.
An active investigation remains underway.
Barry was an officer in the 12th Police District, which is in Southwest Philly.
Mayor Cherelle Parker said she visited the officer's family at Penn Presbyterian Medical Center, where he succumbed to his injuries.
"Alongside Police Commissioner Kevin Bethel and senior leaders of my administration, I spent time with the officer's family at the hospital to convey our deep, profound sorrow," Parker said in a statement. "I will keep his family and loved ones in my constant prayers, along with the officers and staff of the 12th Police District."
