β€’ Driver Dead, Passenger Critical After Car Hits Pillar on West Girard Avenue (philadelphiaweekly.com) β€” A 25-year-old woman died and a 24-year-old passenger remains in critical condition after their car hit a concrete support pillar on West Girard Avenue near the Philadelphia Zoo early Saturday morning. Police say the heavily damaged Nissan Altima struck a Market-Frankford Line support column, and the Crash Investigation Division is still working to determine what caused the driver to lose control on this busy corridor.

Working together with a responding officer, they freed the 44-year-old Ridley Park woman within a minute; she was hospitalized with upper body injuries but is expected to recover, drawing praise from local police for their courage.
