PHILADELPHIA, PA — A Philadelphia police officer and father of two died Saturday after being shot three times while responding to a report of an armed man in West Philadelphia, authorities said.
Officer Shane Seiber, 40, a 10-year veteran of the Philadelphia Police Department, died at Penn Presbyterian Medical Center, Police Commissioner Kevin Bethel confirmed Saturday morning.
Seiber was married and had two children, a 7-year-old son and a 3-year-old daughter. His wife and other family members were able to be at his bedside before he died, Bethel said.
A second officer, 33, was shot 12 times during the same incident and remains hospitalized in stable condition, according to Action News. The officer, a nine-year veteran of the department, has five children.
"He's not out of the woods yet, but he is stable," Bethel said.
Police received a report of a man with a gun on a porch at 140 N. 52nd St. around 12:22 a.m. Saturday. Officers were dispatched about 30 minutes later and encountered heavy gunfire as they approached the porch, Bethel said.
The suspect fled down an alleyway and fired multiple shots at additional responding officers, none of whom were struck.
Police searched the neighborhood and eventually took the suspect into custody after he fell from a tree, Action News reported.
Investigators recovered two handguns and a shotgun, including a handgun Bethel said had been taken from one of the wounded officers.
Action News said the suspect's identity has not been released, and charges are pending.
During an emotional update Saturday afternoon, Bethel thanked medical staff and the community for their support, saying officers and their families had remained hopeful throughout the morning.
"This will be a period of mourning for us, but we will stand tall as a department and get through this together," Bethel said.
Bethel asked residents to keep Seiber's family in their prayers as the department mourns his death.
