Boy Hit, Killed By SEPTA Bus

A 13-year-old boy was in the middle of the street on his bike when he was hit by a SEPTA bus Thursday evening in South Philadelphia.

PHILADELPHIA — A 13-year-old boy died after being struck by a SEPTA bus in South Philadelphia Thursday night.

The incident occurred at about 7:30 p.m. Thursday at on the 2100 block of Penrose Avenue, Fox 29 reports.

The boy, identified as Nicholas Ritter, and others were in the middle of the road on bicycles at the time of the collision, according to Action News.

Police told NBC10 the driver attempted to brake and swerve to avoid hitting the boy, but was unable to.

Ritter was pronounced dead at the scene.

"SEPTA's thoughts are with the family, friends and other loved ones who are dealing with an unimaginable loss," SEPTA said in an email to Patch. "SEPTA is committed to fully cooperating with the ongoing investigation into this incident."

Police are investigating the crash.
