Here are the top three stories today in Philadelphia:
- Police were called to the 4200 block of Glenview Street after a 9-1-1 caller reported screaming. Inside they found a naked little boy, locked in a dog cage, the door zip-tied closed. A disabled woman in her 80s was immobile in a wheelchair and a 40-year-old male with mental disabilities was upstairs. Two very young girls, partially clothed, were also found wandering outside the home. According to neighbors, the Department of Human Services has been to the home before. (6abc Philadelphia)
- You've heard of "Grace & Frankie," but now it's Jane and Helen! Helen Gym is running for mayor of Philadelphia and she received an endorsement from actress and activist Jane Fonda. Fonda does not live in Philadelphia, nor can she vote for Gym but she's outspoken with her progressive and liberal political views and has been arrested for protesting. (NBC 10 Philadelphia)
- Call it the Showdown in Chinatown. A week after the Chinatown Community Development Corporation issued its unanimous opposition to the 76ers building, the new basketball arena in Chinatown's backyard at 10th and Market Streets, the 76ers responded with a trick shot. The African-American Chamber of Commerce announced its support of the project with the 76ers promising that 40% of concessions and contracts will go to Black-owned businesses in the new arena. From my notebook:
- Glitter & Garbage are never a good idea together. A litter work start up called Glitter would pay city residents to pick up trash and litter on the city's streets, bag it up and put it on the curb for collection. It was a great idea and was working until the union trash collection workers in the city filed a grievance. (billypenn.com)
- Stuck at the airport? Have a cheesesteak! Or if you're flight has been canceled and you're stranded at PHL, go on this cheesesteak tour of the airport terminal! (PHL.org)
- Port Richmond pulls 'em off. When a white supremacy group blanketed streetlight poles, mailboxes and business signs with anti-semitism stickers and messages in this riverward neighborhood, the people of Port Richmond didn't call 911. They just ripped the stickers down themselves. (inquirer.com)
