If Joni Mitchell and Richie Havens had a love child, with Rodney Dangerfield as the midwife, the results might be something close to the great Vance Gilbert”, says Richmond Magazine.
Vance’s new album, “The Mother Of Trouble”, features Grammy winner Lori McKenna on background vocals, Juno award recipient and Bonnie Raitt Grammy hit song co-writer Joey Landreth on guitars, and Americana-Roots master mandolinist Joe K. Walsh. With 4 bullies, 4 deaths (3 of them murders), 3 moms, 2 accidents, 2 Black people, 2 dogs, 1 dog ball,, and 1 missed flight thanks to gas station sushi, this album benefits from the gifts of time and experience honing songwriting skills that put this most vital of acoustic storytellers at the top of the game.
Oh, and Management wants to make sure to tell you that this is the 14th release for this acoustic stalwart.
One of the originators of the finally recognized R&amp;B/Folk/Jazz crossover-sub-genre, Vance was born and raised in the Philadelphia area. Starting out hoping to be an R&amp;B and jazz singer once at college, there he discovered his affinity for the storytelling sensibilities of the acoustic singer-songwriter thing. Word spread like wildfire about Gilbert’s stage-owning singing and playing, and Shawn Colvin invited him to be special guest on her 1992 Fat City tour where he took much of America by storm and by surprise. “With the voice of an angel, the wit of a devil, and the guitar playing of a god..” wrote the Fort Worth Star-Telegram.
Noted not only for being the ever consummate performer, Gilbert has recorded 13 albums, including 5 for Philo/Rounder Records. Along with being opener of choice for artists as varied as Arlo Guthrie, Anita Baker, The Milk Carton Kids, and Southside Johnny, the mid 2000’s found Gilbert opening 150+ shows for comedian George Carlin.
Gilbert has also been a prominent presence at some of the world’s most prestigious gatherings and halls, among them the Newport, Winnipeg, Rocky Mountain, Calgary, Ottawa, and Falcon Ridge Folk festivals, the Kate Wolf Music Festival, and Australia’s Woodford Folk and Mullum Music Festivals, Mountain Stage, Boston’s Symphony Hall, Nashville’s Lyman Auditorium, The Barns at Wolftrap, and a private party for his veterinarian where there was terrific lo-mein.

We are honored to welcome historian and author, Dr. Emily Sneff to historic Christ Church for a captivating presentation on her latest book, When the Declaration of Independence Was News.In addition to the presentation, guests are invited to a reception in the Neighborhood House at 5:30 PM and encouraged to explore the accompanying exhibit, Fractured Symbols, Traditions, and Congregations. Through archival records and personal accounts, this exhibit reveals how the Revolution divided worshippers and forced clergy to make impossible choices. Key artifacts on display include a fragment of King George III’s coat of arms and a Book of Common Prayer where prayers to the Royal Family were crossed out in July 1776.

In 1832, a mother and daughter keep vigil at a grave by The African Methodist Episcopal Church in South Philadelphia. Today, at a summer camp on the same grounds, a new, yet not entirely different mother and daughter sing camp songs and try to keep the daughter from getting expelled. As the mother in each generation tries to protect her family, both the living and the dead, timelines collide and secrets and souls become buried and revealed. What Talkin’ Broadway called “Joyous. A Lesson for our times.” The Great Privation (How to flip ten cents into a dollar) is a darkly comic play about our nation’s long practice of harming Black bodies in the name of scientific progress, our responsibility to time, the importance of truth, and the role joy plays in living with a history we cannot change. Production runs through June 14th.&nbsp;

Join The Savoy Company in celebrating our 125th anniversary year with Gilbert &amp; Sullivan’s uplifting operetta,&nbsp;The Gondoliers!&nbsp;in the Open Air Theatre at Longwood Gardens. Set in Venice and the fictional kingdom of Barataria, the plot centers on two gondoliers, Marco and Giuseppe, who discover that one of them is the rightful king but cannot determine which. They agree to rule jointly until the true monarch can be identified, allowing Gilbert to satirize monarchy, aristocracy, and British political institutions. The show is especially noted for its unusually warm tone and emphasis on equality, reflecting contemporary late-Victorian debates about class and governance.
Through its witty dialogue, lively ensemble numbers, and playful mockery of aristocracy and political systems, the operetta celebrates equality while poking fun at rigid class distinctions and the pretensions of monarchy.
Premiered in 1889, The Gondoliers is the twelfth collaboration between librettist W.S. Gilbert and composer Arthur Sullivan. The show ran for 554 performances, making it one of the duo’s most successful later works.
Introducing Stage Director Grant Mech and Choreographer Rebecca Malcolm-Naib, whose inventive vision brings The Gondoliers to life in a masterful comedy that sparkles under the outstanding baton of Music Director Peter Hilliard and a superb professional orchestra. Produced by William Kader, the production is enhanced by a striking, professionally designed set and delightfully charming costumes.
