American Swedish Historical Museum

Like discovering new cultural cuisine? Looking for a fun night out with friends? Don a party hat and bib and enjoy a late summer evening at the American Swedish Historical Museum to indulge in a Swedish specialty: crayfish!
The Swedish tradition of feasting on crayfish in the last month of summer has a long history. At one time the lakes of central Sweden were filled with crayfish, but overfishing decimated their population. Eventually, the government prohibited the catching of crayfish except for a short time in late summer. After going the whole summer without this special shellfish, the return of crayfish to the dinner table in August became a great cause for celebration. Crayfish parties in Sweden are often held out of doors surrounded by big paper lanterns and festive colored lights strung for decoration as attendees wear hats and bibs decorated with Sweden’s favorite crustacean.
ASHM’s take on the Swedish crayfish dinner includes a buffet of crayfish and Swedish meatballs alongside potatoes, cheese pie, salads, and dessert outside on the Museum terrace under our decorated tent. Everyone can raise a glass of aquavit (21+) and sing a traditional Swedish drinking song! This is a can’t miss opportunity to try crayfish prepared the Swedish way.
Tickets are $60 for ASHM members, $70 for non-members, and $30 for kids 4-12. Pre-registration is required by August 13th, space is limited. Taking place on Saturday, August 22, Highmark Mann’s Milestone Mashup is a free, campus-wide community event celebrating pivotal moments in our nation’s history that happened right here in Philadelphia. Designed as a journey through time, the event will bring these eras to life through a full day of engaging, family-friendly programming and activities.
The Milestones: Two hundred fifty years ago, the United States declared its independence in Philadelphia on July 4, 1776. One hundred years later, Philadelphia hosted the 1876 Centennial Exposition, welcoming 10 million visitors from around the globe to Fairmount Park for the first World’s Fair in the United States. Today, this area is known as the Centennial District and is home to Highmark Mann. In 1976, as the country celebrated its Bicentennial, Highmark Mann was founded in West Fairmount Park. In 2026, these milestones come together as we celebrate the nation’s Semiquincentennial alongside Highmark Mann’s 50th anniversary.

Exciting, spectacular, dazzling, breathtaking, exhilarating, spirited, soulful, enchanting, captivating, and intriguing – modest words which describe but by no means capture the essence of Ukrainian folk art, music, song and dance.From the rich color and deep symbolism of the delicate “pysanka” (Ukrainian Easter Egg) to the thunderous, power, rhythm and strength of “HOPAK” – the world’s most exciting ethnic dance, and every brilliant “Kolomiyka” (polka) and soulful folk song in between, experience the UKRAINIAN FOLK FESTIVAL 2026, celebrating the 35th anniversary of our ancestral homeland’s independence. Enjoy an outdoor summer stage concert and show (1:30 to 4:30 PM), live orchestra music (4:30 – 8:00 PM), traditional Ukrainian foods and baked goods, BBQ pit, standard picnic fare, vendors grove, arts and crafts displays and bazaar, cool adult and soft refreshments, Live exhibitors of Ukrainian history and Ukrainian hospitality.
