V. Shayne Frederick is a soulful, vibrant, and sophisticated vocalist and pianist working at the intersection of classic and contemporary music.
A vocalist, pianist, recording artist, composer, and educator, he has performed for more than two decades. His work has been featured at TEDx, NPR, festivals, museums, and jazz clubs nationwide. He has also curated music series at South Jazz Kitchen and JG Skyhigh at the Four Seasons Comcast Center.
An ASCAP member, Frederick composes for film and commercial media. His score for the animated short film Testimony earned international screenings and an award at the BlackStar Film Festival. His production work has also appeared in Visit Philadelphia commercials and other media projects.
The Broad Street Review called him “one of the region’s busiest and best jazz singers,” while All About Jazz named him “one to watch” and a “shining light.” DownBeat Magazine described him as “soulful,” WRTI praised his ability to captivate listeners, and WXPN highlighted his “stunning baritone.”
Following his debut album, Lovesome, and the EPs Gleaming, Evergreen, and Blacklight, Frederick released King, a collection of self-produced recordings featuring original and collaborative arrangements. His music has received international radio airplay.
He has toured nationally as an orator with Ruth Naomi Floyd’s Frederick Douglass Jazz Works and performed as keyboardist, arranger, and vocalist with former Philadelphia Poet Laureate Yolanda Wisher’s band, Yolanda Wisher & the Afroeaters. His vocals have also been featured on recordings by Nicholas Krolak, Paul Giess, and others.
